Bombardier Jet Skis

Most people are familiar with Bombardier because of their hot line of snowmobiles. The model name most commonly known is the Ski-Doo. The production of Bombardier jet skis was first attempted in the 60s.

Bombardier wanted to take the concept of the Ski-Doo and put it to water. They got the idea from a man named Clayton Jacobson II. It is no wonder why Bombardier wanted to call their first jet ski some similar to their very popular snowmobile. Hence, the name Ski-Doo was developed.

Sadly, in the 60s when Bombardier tried to produce the Sea-Doo there were some engineering problems that couldn’t be worked out. Due to technology restrains of the time, they didn’t know how to fix the problem.

To protect themselves, Bombardier pulled their personal watercraft from the market before it even got there. They didn’t want to hurt their reputation for their safe snowmobile, the Sea-Doo. This wasn’t their end in the watercraft world.

Mr. Jacobson ended up selling his patent to Kawasaki who ended up figuring out how to create a safe watercraft in the 80s. All of the early versions of Kawasaki jet skis were stand-ups.

When the idea of personal watercrafts caught fire, Bombardier jet skis once again resurfaced. Instead of creating models that were for more athletic types, Bombardier created a model that almost anyone could use.

The production of the first sit-down model came out with Bombardier’s sit-down model, the Sea-Doo. This gave people the opportunity to ride for longer times because they didn’t have to worry about the strength of their legs to keep them up.

Bombardier thought that they would be able to create a market for average people instead of looking toward extreme athletes to purchase these vehicles. They made a good decision.

Interestingly enough, when Bombardier produced the Sea-Doo again, their designs weren’t a lot different from the first model that they tried putting on the market in the 60s.

Sea-Doos became popular enough that the brand name came to reference any personal, sit-down watercraft. Bombardier jet skis have since made other models that accommodate different types of riders.
